Hey! My dad took his swallow test... Although he did not pass he's not giving up! His current feeding tube will be replaced with another feeding tube directly to his stomach this will make him stronger! The stronger he gets te faster his rehab starts! Still no speech but he's smiling and communicating in other ways! Dad is so strong I can't stress how hard he's trying! We're going to have bad days and good days, but everyday is a good day when I get to see him! Dad loves mom more than ever she's a trooper, ive been begging her to sleep lol. Right now he doesn't need any visitors it's almost to stressful to him to be surrounded by a lot of people! We want to keep him as less stressed as possible! Rehab is when he will need cheerleaders! My mother has selected Frazier rehab due to the speech program , this will be the better choice for my dad! Hopefully he will be there in a week! Other than the swallow test, he has rested most of the day! We love all of your comments! Keep posting

  1. Hey Brooke, I watched a special on Gabbie Giffords last night. When she was learning to speak again, she couldn't respond in words but could respond by singing along with a song. Supposedly, this involves another area of the brain. (Please forgive my lack of medical terminology) Anyway, music is great therapy for patients with brain trauma. I'm so glad you are playing some music for John!!!

  2. Brooke,
Please tell your Dad that I was up wayyy too late last night watching his WILDCATS - in disbelief at how good they are gonna be this season. He will surely giggle at the thought of razzing me about this all year!!
Also, ditto on what your A. Beth shared earlier - you and Blake are both amazing and such a blessing to your Mom, Dad, Maggie and rest of the family for the fortitude and support that you have shown. Keep the faith and dont hesitate to call (or TEXT :<) ) for help! love u all - lori

  3. Hi Brooke- Not sure if you remember me, but I babysat for you & Blake quite a few years ago. My husband used to work with your mom. Anyway, Phil & I are both Occupational Therapists now and I have an OT friend in L'ville. Here's her scoop on best rehab places from an insider's point of view: "Southern Indiana rehab (across the bridge in Indiana) is good as well as Frazier here in Louisville though they can be hard to get into sometimes. Baptist east hospital also has a good acute rehab program. Hopefully his insurance will let him go there vs skilled nursing facility (snf). Oaklawn is probably the best/nicest for snf if he has to go that direction." We're praying for your dad & your family. If you need any interpretations of stuff or have any questions about rehab, that's what I do and would be happy to coach you guys along as to what to expect, etc as time goes on. These first 3 months are critical once he's medically stable to get him in a good rehab. Prayers & blessings! Erica & Phil Chorosevic

  6. Hi Wethington Family - We are thinking about you and John every day. As Brooke says, John is such a strong man and he will fight back from this and be back at the pool next summer, cheering for Maggie at swim meets. We pray for strength, hope, peace and happiness for your whole family. Deanna - if you need a hand to hold, a trashy magazine to read or a friend to listen to your worries - I'm there! Brooke - thanks so much for keeping us updated. Please give John a big hug from the Beach Family.

  8. Hi Brooke, I graduated high school with your Aunt Beth...I also run into your grandma alot at Abbingtons! I also graduated high school with your Uncle Bill (actually went to prom with him) and I also know Paula. Your Mom was a little younger she probably doesnt remember me. Anyway, please tell your family I have been praying for your dad since Beth requested prayers on FB. You are doing a wonderful job on the blog and now I won't have to bother Beth for updates. Please know God is still in the miracle business and I will continue to pray for your dad :) Just watched 20/20 on Gabby Gifford and music really seemed to help her. Also, I recently watched an Oprah Winfrey show that stressed not to let "negative energy/people" in your dad's space. Maybe you could post a sign on the door like Gabby Gifford's husband to remind even himself to BE POSITIVE and only enter the room with upbeat attitudes. Your blog sounds really POSITIVE and that has to be so great for your DAD!!! Hang in there with a SMILE :) Kandi Stephens (Kandra McPherson class of .79)

  11. What a good day for you guys, Brooke! I TOTALLY agree on the visitors -- but since your mother helped me develop my stalker qualities in high school/ college and beyond,,, I will still be comin' sometime early December (actually, I think we developed those qualtities together...!)
Anyway - I just want to drop off some things at the house and mainly give your Mom a hug. We've been writing back and forth on Facecrack recently, since we both joined, and have talked about hooking up... so, naturally, I can't put it off any longer. Tell her I love her with all my heart, and always have, no matter what...! Hang in there, Brooke, you are learning some valuable life lessons that will serve you tremendously in your life - and I can tell you already 'get it.' I know Deanna thanks God every day for the wonderful family she has. My positive thoughts (hell yeah!) and prayers are with you all! (Make sure Maggie is walkin Tripp - if she's anything like my Laurel - which they are very close in age,,, don't let her get away with anything!!) :-) xoxoxoxo
